Your personal brand is a great way to express who you are and what you do without even saying a word. You are the first thing people see when they search your name, so whatever is on the outside has to match what you preach. In our previous post, "The Power of Personal Branding", we discussed how to build your personal brand through social media and networking. Now, we're focusing on the outside and how you can use fashion as a business tool.

1. Know who you are and what you want to represent

What do you want people to think when they look at you? Knowing who you are and what you want to represent is an important part of growing your personal brand. Being true to yourself and understanding what type of influence you want to make on others, will make it easy for you to successfully start and maintain your personal brand.

I've always loved fashion so personal styling has organically turned into a career of mine. Therefore, I make sure I always look the part no matter where I go. When it comes to social media, I take full body pictures to draw attention to my entire outfit. Sometimes, I even tag the brands that were featured in each look. This is all a part of my personal brand and show my audience what I am about.

2. Use color to portray your message

After defining your brands purpose, it's crucial that you pick the right dominant color to represent your brand and appeal to your target audience. This color should appear on all your promotional materials, website and logo. The color you choose should represent your brand in the best way possible.

Color also plays an important part in your overall appearance. How you wear certain colors will attract certain people. Thankfully, the color palette is pretty diverse when it comes to working in fashion.

As a stylist, the colors in my wardrobe are constantly changing. Depending on my mood or where I'm going, I gravitate towards black or brown or red. Some stylist may even stick to one specific color which is great too, but it's kind of hard to just choose one.

3. Identify your signature style

We were all taught to never judge a book by its cover but when it comes to your brand, you have no choice.

Now that you know what you want to represent and your dominant color, you can now determine your signature style. The first thing people see when they look at you is your outfit and you should want to make a good first impression. What will people remember about your appearance? A signature look is memorable and can be anything.

Here are some examples:

  • A red lip

  • Fun hats

  • Scarves

  • Blue sneakers

These are just a few ideas on how you can stand out from others in your industry. Whatever you choose to be your signature style, wear that style A LOT and others will start to remember. You should want to be remembered for all the right things and nothing less.

Without a strong personal brand, it will be difficult for you to reach your customer base. You should want your potential clients to trust you, come back for more and refer others.

Ask yourself, "does your appearance match what you're selling"?
